Long before electric bikes became a fixture of city streets and trails, Gazelle was already imagining what the future of cycling could look like. In 1937, that vision became reality with the launch of the Gazelle Electro, the world’s first production ebike.
A True Original
Developed in collaboration with Philips, the Electro was a fully produced ready-for-market electric bicycle. Others had dabbled in electric concepts, but the Electro was the first to reach actual customers. A total of 117 units were sold, marking a quiet revolution in personal transportation.
Let’s talk specs (and remember, this was 1937):
- Weight: 50 kg (110 lbs)
- Battery Range: 40 km (24 miles)
- Top Speed: 11 mph
- Charging Time: A full day

A Collaboration Between Royal Dutch Icons
The Electro was the product of two of the Netherlands’ most innovative companies: Gazelle and Philips. Both would eventually earn the distinguished title of “Koninklijk” or “Royal Dutch”, a rare honor granted by the Dutch monarchy to companies with national significance, a long-standing reputation for excellence, and at least 100 years of history.
By modern standards it might sound clunky and limited, but at the time this advancement in technology was truly impressive. The Electro was a bold answer to a question most people hadn’t even thought to ask: What if a bicycle could help you ride farther and easier with electric power?
Philips, founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, was already known for pushing the boundaries of technology. First in lightbulbs, then radios, and eventually consumer electronics and healthcare innovation. Their expertise in electrical components was essential to making the Electro’s pioneering power system possible.
Gazelle, founded in 1892, would go on to receive its own Royal designation in 1992, recognizing a century of innovation and craftsmanship in bicycle manufacturing.
Together, these two Royal Dutch companies created something truly ahead of its time.
The End of the Beginning
Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t have been worse. A financial depression in the Netherlands and the looming threat of World War II meant that production of the Electro was soon halted. The project was shelved, and the idea of an electric bicycle faded into history, for a while.

A Legacy That Still Rides
It would take nearly 70 years before Gazelle reintroduced electric bikes into its fleet. Today, we offer a wide range of premium ebikes designed for urban commuting, leisure riding, and everything in between. With durable frames, powerful Bosch motors, and best-in-class Dutch design, Gazelle continues to lead the way in electric mobility.
But it all started with the Electro.
More Than a Bike: A Milestone
The 1937 Gazelle Electro stands as a testament to what’s possible when bold ideas meet fearless innovation. At a time when electricity was still finding its place in the home, Gazelle was already putting it on two wheels. The Electro wasn’t just ahead of its time, it was in a league of its own.
And while it may not be part of our current lineup, the innovative spirit of the Electro lives on in every ebike we build today.
